How I have built my pujaghar – DIY woodworking India

The passion of woodworking grew day by day. We planned to shift to our new house. I thought how about building the furnitures myself! It sounded like a crazy idea both for me and my wife, but somehow I was able to convince my wife that I would not screw up anything.
We shifted to our new house in April 2016 without any noticeable furniture. There was a bed, one plastic chair, 4 plastic stools! I could see the anger in her eyes(:-D) but I learnt how to cope with it. I had told her my plans. First thing to do was the puja ghar.

Once the plan was ready, it was time to buy raw materials. That included primarily –
1. plywood – 18 mm thick 8×4 sheet, 4 mm thick 8×4 sheet.
2. laminates – choose colour and type of your choice
3. frosted glass design of Lord Ganesha – provide the design to glass shop and they will do it for you.
4. Hydraulic lift up gas spring soft open cabinet hinges – go for 10kg capacity
5. wall mount screws
6. Hinges
7. Wood beading
Tools used:
1. Circular saw – I prefer circular saw because of the ease to use it. I have the ‘skil’ 7 inch one which is quite heavy duty. If you don’t have one, below are the links. Bosch marble cutter can also be bought. Do not take it wrong that it can be used only for marble cutting. It can be used for wood cutting once you buy a 4′ circular saw blade for wood. You can go for Bosch 4 inch circular saw blade listed. Nevertheless, if you want to go with traditional handsaw, that is absolutely fine.
2. Drill kit – It is absolutely necessary thing to have once you are into woodworking. Drilling holes will be always there! So, get one if you don’t have. Here is the one I have.
3. A wood file, the one I have.
4. Screws – available in local hardware stores
5. Sand papers – available in local hardware stores
Executing the plan by DIY woodworking India
Mark and cut your 18mm thick ply to cut 4ft x 10 inch – 8 pieces. For the lower small stool like design, 3ft long piece and 2 pieces of 5′ are required.
4mm plywood is to be cut in 48’x46’3/5′”. It is to be fitted in the backside to hide the back side support blocks.
So, pieces required for your carcass is ready. Now, it is time to join them.
Lets look at the plan more closely. Click on it to zoom. The top/bottom plywood blocks will sit in between the 2 side blocks and screwed from side. This will give a good support for the load when the puja ghar is wall hanged and idles are placed. Do not put the top/bottom blocks on top of side blocks and screw them from top/bottom. It will not be as strong as the former.
The back block will also sit between 2 side blocks. There will be 2 back blocks, one will fit towards top as shown by the dotted lines and other goes towards bottom. Screw them from outside of the side blocks. The shelves will also be screwed from side.
